The Art of Decanting: A Personal Guide for Perfume Enthusiasts

Decanting perfume is a skill that allows fragrance enthusiasts to create portable versions of their favourite scents or share samples with friends. As enthusiasts ourselves, we have brought together a guide to help you through the process of decanting your favourite perfumes at home, while prioritising the preservation of each fragrance.

Why Decant Fragrances?

Decanting perfume offers several benefits, from expanding your fragrance options during travels to sharing the love of scents within the fragrance community. Whether you desire variety, wish to sample fragrances you don't own or want to split larger bottles with others, decanting allows you to customise your perfume experience to suit your unique preferences.

Essential Equipment for Decanting:

Before diving into the decanting process, gather these essential tools:

Sealable Vessels: Choose from a range of options such as small sample atomisers, roller ball vials, drams, or even larger perfume bottles, depending on your needs.

Funnel: Opt for a metal or glass funnel to minimise mess and ensure precision during decanting. Plastic funnels can work too, but take care to clean them thoroughly to avoid contamination.

Syringe: For accurate measurements and delicate decanting, utilise a syringe with a fitted mouthpiece to extract perfume from the original bottle.

Tube Dispenser: A convenient tool to direct perfume flow into a vial without excessive atomisation, these dispensers simplify the decanting process.

Labels: Make your decants personal and organised with a simple label maker, ensuring clarity and ease as your travel.

Decanting Techniques:

Direct Spritz Method:
For small samples or quick decants, hold the vial close to the atomiser's mouth and spray the perfume directly, ensuring minimal product wastage. Though slightly messy, this technique provides an effortless solution for on-the-go decanting.

Funnel Decanting:
When precision and cleanliness matter, opt for the funnel method. Place a metal or glass funnel in the vial's opening and carefully pour the perfume, minimising any spills or splashes. Remember to rinse the funnel immediately after each use to maintain purity.

Syringe Method:
For meticulous decanting, consider using a syringe to withdraw perfume from the original bottle. Fit the syringe's mouthpiece over the atomiser tube, keeping the perfume intact. Alternatively, you can place the syringe over the tube and pump down gently, imitating the spraying action. This method offers accurate measurements and helps preserve the fragrance's integrity.

Tube Dispenser Convenience:
When preparing larger batches of samples or decants, utilise tube dispensers to simplify the process. These dispensers feature atomiser heads with attached tubes that direct the perfume flow. Though primarily made of plastic, they are ideal for occasional use to avoid potential oxidation.

Bonus Tip: Decanting from Rollerball Bottles:
To decant perfume from rollerball bottles, remove the rollerball by gently applying pressure to the top of the fitting while the lid is in place. Once the mechanism starts to slide out, use a pipette or funnel to transfer the desired amount of perfume to your vial. Take caution to avoid applying excessive force that might damage the bottle or harm yourself.

Decanting fragrances is an art that combines personalisation and refinement, allowing us to create a curated collection that reflects our unique taste. By following these refined techniques, you can confidently decant your cherished perfumes, crafting a portable scent experience that suits any occasion.
